New Kitty in the House

I’d like to introduce you to the newest member of the Robertson household.  His name (at the moment) is Little Eli, although we usually call him by one of several nicknames such as Peanut, Noodle, and Pumpkin.  We also call him “Right Turn” because his tail was broken at the base and his long tail is crooked – it always looks like it’s signaling a right turn.  I usually just call him Peanut, though, so that may end up being the name that sticks, even though I prefer to give him a “people” name.  We’ll see.

We had been wanting to adopt another cat for some time, but it never seemed to work out.  We finally decided that we’d know when it was the right time (and the right cat). We thought we’d adopt another black and white cat, although I admit, I’ve always had a soft spot for orange tabbies, even though I’ve never had the pleasure of sharing my home with one — until now.

We discovered Little Eli one hot Saturday morning in August.  He was in a cage at the Farmers Market — the local animal shelter was offering him for adoption.  There was live music blaring, people walking all around him, and young children poking at him.  I knew I had to rescue him.  Within minutes, the adoption was complete and we were taking our new boy home.  He adjusted to his new life immediately.  Jon says he thinks Eli knows he hit the jackpot coming to live with us.  But we know that it was us who hit the jackpot by adopting him.

He’s fun, intelligent, and lively with his non-stop kitten antics.  He’s about seven months old now.  He tries to get the other cats to play with him.  Mitski will have nothing to do with him, but Gary is beginning to get used to him.  We still hope that one day they will all be friends.

Congratulations on your new little one. He’s such a little little boy! I hope he and Gary will be best friends soon!

Thanks Dianne! He is such a little boy! I think Gary will start to be less mystified by him as the kitten matures. Right now, he’s just an orange streak running through the house — he even jumps over Gary, which makes Gary a little nervous!

He’s beeeeuteeful! What a great menagerie.

What a handsome fellow he is…and a wonderful addition to your family. Two years ago we were blessed with a orange tabby who’s owner moved away and left him. He is the sweetest big guy ever. A huge lover. Thank you for adopting and opening your heart and home to another kittty.

Karen, Your orange tabby sounds like a sweetie-pie. I wish I could adopt ALL the kitties that need a home.

Aww! I’m sure they are lighten your day.
    Cats are so fascinating.

I agree, Marie. Cats are extremely fascinating.

Oops, I meant “they lighten your day” !

      They definitely lighten my day!

congrats on the new addition to your family, peanut (or whatever you end up calling him) is so handsome. and i 100% agree with you when you wrote “it was us who hit the jackpot by adopting him.” i feel exactly the same way about our dog, benjamin, who i adopted at the animal shelter when he was just a few months old, he recently turned 10 years old! i feel most grateful to have him, he is so awesome, and i hope that peanut continues to bring you joy and that your other kitty warms up to him soon 😉

Thanks! We think he’s a handsome boy too!

You will surely treasure Little Eli. I’ve had several cats in my lifetime, and loved them all..but our Mustard (orange tabby she was!) was the dearest of all. She was so laid back, affectionate, and an adorable goofball, rolled into one. We had 16 dizzy years with Musty…orange cats are just too cool for words.

Eli reminds me of a cat I rescued decades ago from the junkyard behind the building where I worked. She had a broken tail, too, and despite that, a lovely “purrsonality” that would not quit. She ended up with a different but good home…they said she was the best cat they ever had.

My personal experiences predict that Eli will be a total winner for you! You will love your little boy, I promise!

We’re discovering how unique orange tabbies can be! I always thought black and white cats like Gary acted like dogs, but this little orange guy seems to be even more “dog-like”!

Awwww, he’s so sweet! I just love it when the food blogs I follow share their dog and cat (especially cats!) stories. Always makes me happy. Enjoy your new critter.

Thanks, Karen. We’re definitely enjoying him!

He’s a beautiful boy, I can’t wait to see photos of him and Gary snuggled together (I hope!). It sounds like everyone lucked. 🙂 Well, except for Mitski, but hopefully she will come around. 😉

Still hoping for communal cat snuggles, Susan, but so far, no deal. Maybe when it gets colder!?

Your kitten is the spitting image of my newest cat, who also goes by several names, America, Tid-bits, and most commonly “little cat.” She’s such a little love bug, and extremely playful and active as well. Orange Tabbies are terribly cute, and it’s amazing when looking at your little guy, he looks like a twin of my own! I also want to say, I just started eating Vegan, and your Quick Fix Vegan has been tremendously helpful. I made your Moroccan Pumpkin Hummus this weekend and my omnivore husband is in love. Thank you so much for your thoughtful, flavorful, and fun recipes. They truly have changed my life!!

I love the name “Tid-bits” — so cute! So fun that she looks like our Peanut! I love how expressive orange tabbies are. Thanks for your kind words about my recipes, Lisa. I’m so happy you’re enjoying them

What a beautiful cat. I have a ginger cat as well and he’s the furry joy of my life.

    • Robin October 25, 2012, 2:32 pm

I know what you mean. My cats are definitely the joys of my life!
